I love simple, effective workouts. Perhaps it's the fact that I want my workouts to be an opportunity to rest my mind and get more in tune with my body. The less equipment, the better. Easier set up? I'm in! A super effective, challenging total body workout with a single dumbbell? Yessss, please.
One of my favourite tools for quick and versatile strength workouts is the super band. It's a big loop shaped piece of exercise tubing which comes in varying levels of tension. I love the 1/2 inch bands because they are super easy to pack on vacations (or to the park with my little one) and I can get a full body workout in using this single tool.
Our hips are the base of our core. Many of the muscles that support our torso originate in our hip girdle, so it's paramount to have a strong, supportive base of control in our hips. My favourite tool for healthy hips are what I call 'smarter strength' exercises. These are moves to engage varying muscles of the hips in a functional way.
If you hit up google or pinterest for a quick workout routine to follow, you'll likely miss out on a few key exercises needed to elicit functional strength and an injury free body. Sure, you'll find squats, lunges, push-ups, planks and crunches that heavily target our anterior chain. But what you're less likely to find are exercises that help to strengthen our lateral hips, glutes, and hamstrings.
